My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean...

I heard this song when I was very little... way before I knew what the 'ocean' was... The song was slow and sounded a bit sad... waiting for someone from far away...

Many years later at the Khandala Family Camp run by the Jesuit priest - Fr. Robin Selwyn - we learnt some interesting actions to the song as well...

I'm sure nearly all of you know the song and the actions as well that go with it.

This morning when I looked at the Times of India, the masthead announced that today is World Oceans Day.

Covering more than 70 percent of Earth’s surface, oceans, more than anything, define our small blue planet. World Oceans Day celebrates the complex and vibrant ecosystems, life-sustaining services, calming effects and unimaginable diversity of the Oceans Of Fantasy.

The oceans (and the seas) teem with marine life and scientists believe there are over 9 million species yet to be discovered in the deep blue depths... as we learn from this song from The Little Mermaid

And this tremendous wealth of life Under The Sea is threatened by unauthorised fishing and whaling, plastic pollution and more...

The invitation to keep the oceans healthy is for all of us, not just those who live by the oceans. And for a start, here's what we can do.... reduce the use of plastic bags and bottles, and go about enjoying the Oceans - a gift of God to us...
